Hi there! I hope you are having a wonderful day. I am enjoying the start to the Fall season! It’s a perfect time to pause and thank God for His faithfulness. He alone is worthy of all praise, honor, and glory. In this devotion, I’d like to share a handful of His exceptional qualities for us to contemplate and worship. God is eternal, holy, love, merciful, worthy, and mighty, just to name a few. Join me to see how these attributes also help to guide our prayers and impact our days...

(The themes are taken from my book, “Come to the Father.”)

God is eternal. The LORD has always existed; He reigns from Heaven and holds the whole earth in His hands.

Here's a sampling of verses from Psalm 18:

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies…..In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears….. 9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. 10 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind…. 16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.”

All of time is laid out and unrolled like a scroll before God. His plan for mankind has never changed, and it never will. He is aware and in control of things past, present, and future. Even though He is eternal, He is present with us here and now. He cares about our weeks, days, and moments. His eternal nature ensures He has the greatest wisdom for every one of our situations.

Pause and reflect on His grandeur and take notice of His Presence with you.

God is Holy

Exodus 20:1-21 reminds us that God is holy— unlike humans, He is perfect in every way. Separate, unique, distinct, and sacred—the One and Only; we shall have no other gods or idols; we shall revere His Name alone; we shall keep His day holy and use it to honor Him; God commands that we live holy lives as well. The commandments state that we shall honor our parents, neighbors, and strangers. We shall be honest, trustworthy, content, grateful, and faithful—to God and others. God is holy, He alone deserves our praise.

God is Love

1 John 4:8, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

God loves perfectly, completely, purely, faithfully. God’s love compelled Him to make the greatest sacrifice on our behalf—the life of His One and only Son, Jesus. He bore our sins and endured separation for our sake. He loved and pursued us when we were far away. God so loved the world that He gave His Son to die for us and to save the whole wide world from judgment and condemnation.

“We love because He first loved us.” Out of love, He invites us to pray and converse with Him.

God is Merciful

Ephesians 2:4 reminds us, “Because of His great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ.”

God raised us up and seated us in the heavenly realms; saved us through faith; God has brought us freedom, confidence; in response we have gratitude and love for Him in return. We want to live for Him, praise Him, thank Him, serve Him. He is our merciful Savior and Lord. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice and our faith in Him, we no longer face judgment but gain forgiveness and eternal life instead. We humbly approach His throne of grace with confidence.

God is Worthy

Revelation 4:11, You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Jesus gave His life on the Cross to save us; He alone can bring judgment upon the earth. He sits on the throne in Heaven. He includes us in His Kingdom. He alone is worthy of our praise.

God is Mighty

Jesus is both the Lion and the Lamb—He was slain for our sins but rose victorious from the grave; and He conquered death for everyone who believes. The grave couldn’t hold Him down, death could not defeat Him, the devil is not a threat.  In Him we find our strength too.

Psalm 50:1, The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets.”

Ephesians 1:19-20, “and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,” Ephesians 6:10, “Finally be strong in the Lord’s mighty power.”

Knowing that God is good, having the hope of Heaven, and believing the promise that God is with us now, gives us the power and strength to overcome anything. He is mighty to save; mighty to equip; mighty to help us walk in victory.

  • Which of God’s attributes speak to your heart the most? How does worshipping the Lord impact your prayers?

  • Jot down any verses that encourage you, memorize them and tuck them securely in your heart. Pray in response to how God has revealed Himself to you.

Here’s a short prayer I jotted down:

Lord, as you are hallowed in the heavens, may you be hallowed upon the earth. May the dawn break forth, may the rocks cry out, may my mouth proclaim that a Jesus Christ is Lord. May my life reflect your glory and point others to seek your face. May my words speak of your holiness, power, and grace. May the Gospel message spread like wildfire, igniting hearts worldwide. May your name be on our lips and worship be sung in our praise. Glorify your name, hallow it in our hearts. Let our hope, peace, and joy testify to your greatness. Hallowed be your name! Father, glorify your name in the heavens and among the earth. Glorify your name through us. May we die to self and live for Christ. May seeds of love and hope and the Gospel message spring forth from our lives. Hallow your name today.  Amen.
