Prayer: Drawing Near to God

Welcome!

I wrote the following devotion based on my Bible study/ prayer journal book, “Come to the Father: Drawing Near to God Through Prayer and Scripture.”

I hope to share a series of devotions inspired by this theme, with the aim of strengthening our faith and deepening our relationship with our Heavenly Father. We will seek to hear from the Lord and learn to share our hearts with Him, while using the Bible as our guide.

Any time you sit down to read a verse or passage from Scripture, first ask the Lord to reveal more of His character and love to you, and then take your time and be ready to listen. Find a quiet place where you’re less likely to be interrupted or distracted. Give God your full attention and reap abundant blessings of peace, hope, contentment, and joy. Let Him remind you of His nearness. He will never leave you or forsake you, and you have access to the heavenly Throne Room of God.

God has created us to be in relationship with Him, and every good relationship requires regular communication. God has given us His written Word to help us know and understand Him better. From Genesis to Revelation, we see that God is faithful, loving, kind, merciful, and just. This is the God in whom we can believe and trust. Although the Lord knows every care, concern, heartache and joy that we carry in our hearts and minds and bear on our shoulders, He invites us to draw near and share it all with Him. He rejoices in our victories and cares when we are overwhelmed. Nothing we say will surprise Him.

Psalm 139:3-6 says, You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”

It truly is an awesome thought, too much for my finite human to fully grasp. That God knows me so well—even better than I know myself, and He still loves me! And He loves you extravagantly too!

  • I know I can’t see you, but we are in this together, raise your hand if you ever feel weary, overwhelmed, or dry?

Jeremiah 17:7-8, “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

I pray that the Lord revives and refreshes our spirits whatever this season brings.

  • Think about your current prayer life. How/why would you like to improve it?

Bible study and prayer help us to know God better. They are essential to our spiritual well-being, and their impact overflows into every area of our lives. Hopefully as you spend time in your Bible, prayer also becomes a more regular and natural response.

I love this verse from 1 Samuel 3:10: “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Draw near to God today.

Come to the Father with the heart of a child and listen for His voice.
